Based mainly on pieces in American collections the work gives a commentary on the styles and techniques of the 17th and 18th century furniture makers, a list of the masters from Boulle to Jacob, and a useful pictorial review of pieces arranged in chronological order. An appendix lists artists and craftsmen who influenced furniture design.
