Some light browning, marginalia, dec. e.ps., blind stamp to front f.e.p., gilt lettered remainder cloth, minor marking, spine sl. bumped. With the ownership inscription of Major-General W.O. Barnard dated Gandamak, 31st May 1880. ‘... Never, surely, were greater or more fatal mistakes committed than those by which General Elphinstone and Sir William Macnaughten, between them, inflicted upon England this terrible disaster. It is not likely that these mistakes will be repeated. We shall not attempt to occupy Afghanistan again ...’ The Spectator May 1879.
