First published posthumously in 1757, the work was described by Lord Montgomery, over 200 years as ‘a remarkable work on the art of war.’ In it, Saxe advanced a number of original ideas but the most valuable contribution that he made was to subject ‘military affairs to reasoned criticism and intellectual treatment, and the ensuing military doctrines were perceived as forming a definitive system.’
