THE ADVENTURES OF PEREGRINE PICKLE.

In which are included, Memoirs of a Lady of Quality. London: Printed for C. Cooke N.d. c.[1794].
Cooke’s Ed. 4 vols. 12mo. Vignette t.ps., 10 full page copper engravings, dec. tail pieces. Edges of plates very sl. stained with several re-stitched, ownership ink stamp to front f.e.ps., ownership signature to top edge of t.p. in vol. 4, hinges and joints cracked but firm, contemporary calf backed marbled boards, boards rubbed, extremities rubbed with wear to corners, gilt ruled raised bands and gilt lettered leather title label to sl. rubbed spine chipped at head and tail. Cooke’s Pocket Edition of Select Novels. Each volume has the Bewick bookplate of Head Pottinger Best (of Donnington, Berks, who died in 1887). Printed on later paper, these must have used the original plate but had expunged the original name and details substituting the later ones. This bookplate is not found in Hugo nor in Julia Boyd’s ‘Bewick Gleanings’ but the latter quotes the collector, Mr. Pearson, who says ‘many of these [bookplates] were done for Bewick’s private and cherished friends ... they were labours of love; he lavished his highest gifts on them ...’
