New Ed., Corrected. viii + 304pp. Some light browning, t.p. lightly spotted, some mainly marginal pencil annotations, ownership ink stamp to verso of front f.e.p., marbled e.ps., half calf with cloth boards, lightly soiled and rubbed, corners sl. scuffed, some light fading to edges of boards, raised bands and gilt lettered leather title label to lightly rubbed spine, a.e. red. Together with the famous ‘Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue’ Grose’s works though intended to amuse, give an unusually vivid picture of the speech of the day which would not normally be included in standard dictionaries, and contained, in all, about 9,000 terms which more scholarly works of the time habitually overlooked.
