Including Visits to Ararat and Tabreez and Ascents of Kazbek and Elbruz. Longmans, Green and Co. 1869.
1st Ed. xiii + [i] + 509pp. Colour printed frontis., 3 plates, 3 folding maps, 2 panoramas on 1 plate, 16 woodcuts. Some light browning, prize bookplate, marbled and edges, contemporary prize calf binding with gilt armorial device to upper board, double gilt rule edged boards, dec. gilt compartments with gilt lettered title label to lightly faded spine, minor wear. Neate F71. A delightful work of mountaineering interest, with accounts of the ascents of Kasbek and Elburz. It precedes the authors 'Explorations in the Caucasus' by twenty-seven years; at this time the area was still little-known and dangerous. It was not until 1880 that the Russian Government took steps to control the natural exhuberance of the mountain tribesmen. With Appendices recording details of the Elbruz Expedition of 1829; heights of peaks, passes, towns and villages in the Caucusus Provinces; a catalogue of plants.
