Sm. 8vo. xxix + 430pp. T.p. devices, dec. head pieces. Some light browning, double gilt rule edged japon with dec. gilt filleted bands and gilt lettered red labels to spines, lightly soiled. Haney 60 ‘The third edition of ‘Church and State’, and the second edition of ‘Lay Sermons.’ With the bookplate of James Anderson Rose, (1819-1890). James Anderson Rose was Whistler's solicitor. As well as a solicitor, he was a major print collector, confidant, and friend of artists, including Whistler and Rossetti. He owned The Sleeper and Sleeping woman, and had a magnificent collection of Whistler's etchings. An exhibition of his collection toured the country, going to Liverpool, Newcastle and Birmingham, in 1874.
