5 vols. Large 8vo. Light marginal browning, sm. portion cut from lower edge of last leaf and half titles in all vols., ex.-libris S. Mariae de Stanbrook, label removed from upper e.ps., related newspaper clipping affixed to front pastedown of vol. 2, front pastedown in vol. 1 stained and without front f.e.p., original gilt lettered dark maroon cloth with some minor soiling and rubbings, spines to vols. 1-3 rubbed and chipped with sl. loss at head and tail, spines to vols. 4 & 5 faded and sl. chipped. Joseph Gillow (1850–1921) English Roman Catholic antiquary, historian and bio-bibliographer, ‘the Plutarch of the English Catholics’. Gillow published various researches into the history of Roman Catholicism in Lancashire, but his greatest achievement was the above work.
