1st Ed. 2 vols. xv + 451pp. + vii + 447pp. Chart, 6 plates. Light sporadic browning, rebound in gilt rule edged half calf with marbled boards, gilt rule edged raised bands with intricate gilt devices and gilt lettered title labels to spines, enclosed in custom made marbled board slipcase. Written by two surviving officers of the perilous expedition during which 39 members died and only 9 returned. The expedition was designed to establish a commercial intercourse with Central Africa, via the river Niger. The navigability of the River was proved, at the cost of several lives. The work contains a chapter dealing with the commerce of Africa, and a plan for future trading with central Africa.
